A Second Chance - Chapter Twenty (Final Chapter)
“Stars” Dru was leaning against a nearby bridge, looking up at the stars in the sky. She heard her friends calling out to her, but didn’t move her head. “Dru, are you alright?” Isabelle’s voice had panic in it. “We’re sorry if you needed space, but we had to come out with the way you acted.” Mallory’s expression was full of concern. The two got behind their friend on the bridge, waiting for a response. The only noise that could be heard was the chirps of crickets. “What you said in there had me thinking.” She started. “I wondered if I didn’t ever come back, would Mallory have taken my place?” Neither of them had a response right away so she continued. “In my mind, all I can see is how well it would play out. How she’d slowly be introduced to the residents. They’d be stubborn about her, thinking she was just temporary help. At first they would refuse to imagine I left them for good.” “But then...” Her voice started to crack. “They’d all come around and see how good she is with

"Dinner" Dru found a blue shirt and a dark blue vest to go over it. Both went well with a pair of black jeans she picked out. Mallory settled on a pink and white dress with a black bow around the neck. They paid for their items and returned to the house with enough time to get ready. Not much was said inside as they immediately went to get changed. Alone in her room, Dru stared at herself in her new outfit through the full body mirror. She couldn’t believe what she saw. A formal outfit she liked? After years of various skirts and dresses, she never considered wearing a suit. She struck several poses, oblivious to the door creaking open. “What are you doing?” Mallory entered the room with a grin. Dru jolted back to reality and changed the subject. “Why’d you come in here anyways? I coulda still been changing!” “I knocked a couple minutes ago. You didn’t respond.” “Oh.” She went to sit on the edge of the bed, turning her head in embarrassment. Getting down to sit next to her

“Tom Nook” Mallory’s smile faded and her body tensed up as she saw where Dru was leading her. She stopped in place. “What are you doing?” she asked with an upset tone. “You have a debt and ran away right?” Dru turned back to her friend. “I’m going to make sure this is settled.” “No!” She ran to the opposite side of the street and sat on the bench. She followed shortly after, taking a seat next to her. They watched the ocean in silence, and Dru could see the worry in Mallory’s eyes. “I’m scared.” she finally said. “I’m scared of what will happen to me.” “I know Tom Nook is known for his outrageous loans, but trust me, he won’t punish you. The guy doesn’t even charge interest.” When that didn’t calm her friend, she asked, “Do you want to know a secret?” “What?” She finally looked Dru in the eyes. “I never paid off my last loan. Never even went back in here since I arrived.” She gave her friend a sincere grin. “So if I can go eight months or so without paying it back, I’m sure

“Ceremony” An alarm woke the two of them up early enough to give them time for their morning schedules. Breakfast was light for Dru; she was too nervous to eat a lot. The sound of the clock ticking reverberated in her head. Mallory, who was still eating, had her silverware go across the plate. Each time it made contact with the plate, a metallic sound rang out. It drove Dru nuts. “Dru, you seem tense. Maybe you should get some fresh air or at a cold shower?” Mallory suggested. She sighed. “You’re right. I might just do both, depending on how long I’ll be in the shower.” The cold water on her skin helped calm her down. After being in the ocean yesterday, she needed a shower anyways. Her nerves were still a bit wiry afterwards. After telling Mallory of her plans, she opened the door and headed out. The sun was covered by grey clouds. It looked as if it would rain. She hoped it would hold off until she was done with the ceremony. Nothing would be more frustrating than having to cut

“Redder” Having two people did make the trip from the basket to Re-Tail easier, but it still involved a bit of back and forth. Paired with the exhaustion of the day of the island, both of them wanted nothing more than to rest. Unfortunately for them, there was still just a bit more to do before they could call it quits. With the newfound money, they rushed over to Lloid and paid off the funds for the bridge in full. The two of them high-fived in celebration. Knowing they got all the donations they needed gave them extra energy. As usual, Town Hall was their next destination. Isabelle greeted them as soon as they entered and they returned the formality. She was then caught up to speed on the bridge. “Oh that’s wonderful! I knew the two of you could do it!” She clapped her paws together in excitement. “Best of all, I still have some bells left over!” Dru added. “No more convenience store noodles for me!” Isabelle noticed something different about her. “Oh! You’re wearing a

“Sunset” They had finally made it out to the island. They got their needed materials from a nearby Lloid and started looking around. “It’s not very big.” Dru remarked. “This brochure I have says what kind of creatures we can find here.” She looked up to find Mallory gone. She turned her head back and forth until she heard a splash. Looking out in the ocean, Mallory’s head popped back up. “What are you doing?” Dru got closer to the edge. “Diving.” she simply replied. “You’re good at catching bugs, and I’m good at diving.” “You can keep that skill to yourself. I can’t keep my head underwater for more than a second.” While Mallory stayed out in the ocean, Dru got out the rental bug net. She stood in an area where she could see all the trees in her line of view. As soon as a bug would land on a tree, she’d sneak up and catch it. Occasionally, she’d glance at the brochure, then back to the bugs to see which would sell the highest. Her grasp on the net loosened as she heard her

“The Hat” The two got on another boat over to the island where the tour was held. Tortimer introduced himself, and they were handed bug catching nets. He explained they would be timed for five minutes and needed to get twenty bugs if they wanted medals. “Ready, set, GO!” Tortimer announced and the timer started. Dru walked around until she heard the sound of a cicada buzzing. Her pace slowed as the sound grew louder until she spotted it on a tree in front of her. Her net was held in position. Inching closer, she got right up to the tree and- “AAAAAH!” Mallory screamed. Dru looked over to see her friend being overwhelmed by a grasshopper. Looking back at the tree, she saw the bug had flown away from the loud noise. She sighed and went over to the other girl. “Dru, I don’t like this.” she whined. “That’s perfectly fine.” She moved her hand in front of her. “Watch this.” The grasshopper jumped away from the two and Dru got in her sneaking position again. In one swoop of her net

“The Island” The next morning it was dreary outside. Dru looked out the window and saw it was raining hard. She walked back to her bedroom and opened her dresser. She finally found the single umbrella she owned after tossing numerous clothing items onto her bed. While she now had an umbrella, she had to deal with the pile of clothes. After ten minutes, she was ready to go to Town Hall. She looked over to Mallory, who was putting on a pink raincoat. “You ready to go?” Dru asked. “Yep.” They made their way over to the building, and opening the door revealed Isabelle going over some papers. At the sound of the door closing, she looked up and smiled at them. “Hello you two! Was sleeping over there better for you, Mallory?” “I think so.” “That’s great to hear!” She put the work down and got out the clipboard. “Now all that’s left is getting the funds for the public work project.” Dru leaned against the wall and sighed. “How are we going to do that? “Feelings” “What on earth are you saying?” Dru exclaimed, her face bright red. “What do you think I’m saying?” “That this is a confession!” “What!? No! At least, I don’t think it is!” Mallory’s face was also red now. “Now what does that even mean?” Dru got up from the couch. “I...I don’t know.” She clenched her hat in frustration. Dru walked over to her and spoke gently. “Tell me what you do know, then. What does this town make you feel?” “It makes me want to live here. With you. And Isabelle. And all the other wonderful villagers here.” “Now go back to me. What do you think about me?” “I think you’re wonderful. You put yourself down too much but you deserve the world.” “Is that in a platonic way or romantic?” “Platonic.” She looked up at Dru, removing the tight grip from her hands. “Did you want it to be romantic?” “No. Er, at least, if ever we decide to....it won't be for awhile. I just met you after all.” The two were silent, unsure of what to do next. The only noise
